The Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976 grandfathered in an estimated 65,000-100,000 chemicals currently on the market today.   They have had no testing to determine if they're safe.

What does that mean to you? 

Simply put:  These chemicals have not had any safety testing and we know very little information about their effects. Of the chemicals tested, toxic labeling is required only if 50% or more of the animals tested with a chemical die.  Under the TSCA, manufacturers are protected by trade secret laws that allow them to keep their ingredient lists a secret.

This is one of many reasons we want to avoid toxic chemicals in the home.

Read all labels, not just the food ones.   There are so many hidden chemicals in our everyday products that are harmful to our health and body . What we want to do is EMPOWER ourselves, and EDUCATE everyone on what to avoid, and how to avoid it.  Together, we can seriously change the world.  

Here are a few to be aware of:

+ Fragrance:
Short term toxicity can include coughing, skin irritation, rash, wheezing, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and irritability. Long term toxicity can include cancer, lung disease, heart disease and reproductive disorders.  
Found in: scented candles, perfumes, lotions, and more.  

+ Triclosan:
Used in many formulations as an antibacterial agent to prevent or reduce bacterial contamination, and is registered as a pesticide by the EPA. Topical absorption of Triclosan has shown disturbances to the endocrine system, and is believed to lead to birth defects and uncontrollable cell growth.  
Found in: soaps, deodorants, cosmetics, shave gel, first aid spray, kitchenware and children’s toys.  

+ Phthalates:
A low-cost endocrine disrupting chemical that in lab studies has shown to interfere with hormone production in rats and mimic estrogen in human studies.  
Found in: plastic food packaging, lotions, skin moisturizers, fragrance, cleaners, glues and nail polish.  

+ Formaldehyde:
This is a known carcinogen and recognized as such by the Cancer Institute. Exposure can cause eye irritation, asthmatic response, skin irritation, headaches and nausea. Long term effects include cancer and possibly leukemia.   
Found in: baby shampoo, pet shampoo, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, sunblocks, cosmetics, baby wipes, toothpaste, and more.

This is the only soap we use and love. Ingredients you don't want in your products: 

1. Optical Brighteners 

Many popular laundry detergents contain optical brighteners to give clothes the appearance of being clean and white. By reflecting blue light, optical brighteners give the illusion of fabrics that look whiter than they actually are. These chemicals are designed to absorb into fabrics and remain on clothes after washing.  Use the Think Dirty App to look up your detergent.  Thieves Laundry Soap is free from optical brighteners, because you don’t want your clothes to just look clean; you want them to actually be clean! Our plant-based formula uses pure essential oils and natural cleansing enzymes to wash your clothes and keep them fresh.  

2. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

Sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, is a cleansing agent widely used in products like soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, and laundry detergents. It is used so often because it’s inexpensive and produces lots of foamy lather. Many people are concerned about SLS in their products because it can sometimes cause irritation, itchiness, and may have other unknown side effects.  Thieves Laundry Soap is free from SLS and other sulfates. The cleaning power behind Thieves Laundry Soap comes from pure essential oils and natural enzymes.  

3. Synthetic Perfumes 

Some people consider synthetic perfumes to be problematic because companies aren’t required to disclose the exact ingredients in the fragrances.
