Reiki (pronounced Ray – Key) means Universal Life Force Energy. It is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is a ‘light-touch’ or ‘no-touch’ therapy technique of energy healing that balances the chakras and restores the body’s energy to a balanced and healthy state. Reiki works through healing the source of energy blockages. Known by various other names such as biofield therapy or therapeutic touch it is based on the principle that the adequate flow of healing energy (called “Ki” in Japan, “Chi” in China, and “prana” in India) can lead to good physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological health.
During a Reiki session, energy is transmitted through hands hovering above important energy centers (chakras) to release blockages and support healing, based on the individual needs of each person. Relaxing music and sound therapy might also be incorporated during each session.
Everyone has a different experience during and after a Reiki session. One may experience physical sensations such as tingling, warmth, coolness, a feeling of lightening or leaving the body, or a momentary twitch as energy moves through the body. Most experience Reiki as a relaxing, calming and grounding experience.
